Zanzibar and Comoros to Strengthen Historic Business and Cultural Ties
Zanzibar
Zanzibar’s President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has emphasized the need to restore and deepen economic diplomacy between Zanzibar and Comoros. Speaking yesterday during a meeting with the Governor of Moroni City, Ngazija Islands, Mr. Ibrahim Mzee, at the Zanzibar Presidential Palace, Dr. Mwinyi highlighted the importance of reigniting historic trade relations and fostering stronger business ties for the benefit of both island nations.
Dr. Mwinyi pointed out that the longstanding relationship between Zanzibar and Comoros had, in the past, allowed for fruitful economic and cultural exchanges. He called for the revitalization of this cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, which had once been flourishing. He encouraged the Comorian delegation to bring back business groups to Zanzibar to explore potential opportunities in commerce and investment, just as they had done in earlier years.

One of the key areas of focus discussed was the re-establishment of maritime services between the two islands. Dr. Mwinyi noted that restoring sea vessel services would not only boost trade but also enhance social connections between the people of Zanzibar and Comoros. This would provide citizens on both sides with more opportunities to engage in cross-border commerce, cultural exchange, and tourism.

Dr. Mwinyi also suggested promoting Kiswahili language education as a means of strengthening cultural ties. He proposed the introduction of exchange programs that would see Zanzibar teachers traveling to Comoros to teach Kiswahili or vice versa, given the linguistic similarities between the two nations. This cultural cooperation, he noted, would help to bridge the gap between the two countries and further solidify their ties.

In response, Governor Ibrahim Mzee commended Zanzibar’s rapid development and transformation, acknowledging that Comoros could learn valuable lessons from Zanzibar’s successes. He extended an invitation to Dr. Mwinyi to visit the Ngazija Islands, with the aim of sharing experiences and knowledge in various areas of development.
The visit by the Comorian delegation marks a significant step in revitalizing the historical cooperation between Zanzibar and Comoros, building on shared cultural and economic interests that date back centuries. Both leaders expressed optimism for the future of this partnership, envisioning a new era of strengthened ties that will benefit their peoples economically and socially.
