Vodun Festival 2025: A Celebration of Arts, Culture and Spirituality Kicks off Today in Ouidah

The historic city of Ouidah in Benin Republic is set to come alive from today for three spectacular days—January 9, 10, and 11, 2025, as it hosts the annual Vodun Festival- renowned for its deep cultural and spiritual attributes. transforming Ouidah into a vibrant hub of activities, drawing participants and visitors from across the globe to celebrate Vodun arts, traditions, spirituality and humanity.
The festival is centered around iconic landmarks, including the poignant Door of No Return, a powerful symbol of resilience and history and the history of Ouidah, where sacred rituals, traditional music, and colorful exhibitions pay homage to the rich Vodun culture of Benin people.
Day 1 activities-A Journey into Vodun Heritage
The festivities formally kick off today, with events running from 10 AM to 5 PM across various significant locations in Ouidah:
Place Maro (Egungun Destination): The square will be animated with vibrant Egungun performances, celebrating ancestral spirits through dazzling displays of masked dances and storytelling.
Esplanade du Fort Français (Zangbéto): This location will host Zangbéto, the “Night Watchmen” rituals, showcasing the mystery and power of these traditional guardians of the night.
Place du Temple des Pythons: Visitors can immerse themselves in the spiritual essence of Vodun through ceremonies dedicated to Kooro, Thron, and Nana Yosi.
Forêt Sacrée de Kpassè: The sacred forest becomes a living gallery with rituals honoring Hounvê, Koku, Kabada, and Atchinan.
Couvent Sakpata de Zoungbodji: A unique space for experiencing Vodun Sakpata animations, reflecting the deep connections to earth and healing.
Couvent Mami Plage: A serene setting where Vodun Mami and Dan rituals are performed, offering a glimpse into water deities’ significance.
