FTAN Reacts to Tourism Ministry Merger, Urges Visionary Leadership
Abuja–
The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) has expressed concern over the recent merger of the newly established Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture, Arts, and the Creative Industry. This decision, announced by President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, consolidates the sectors under the new Ministry of Culture, Arts, Tourism, and Creative Industry. The announcement also included the removal of Lola Ade John as the tourism minister, making her the immediate past minister.
FTAN, the umbrella organization representing private operators across Nigeria’s tourism sector, acknowledged the strategic link between tourism, arts, and culture but noted the unexpected nature of the merger.
“The news of this merger and the minister’s removal came as a rude shock to us,” said FTAN President Nkereuwem Onung. “However, we believe that this government decision is not a misplaced priority. The convergence of these sectors under one ministry presents a unique opportunity for a more integrated approach to development.”
Onung emphasized the importance of appointing the right leadership to ensure the success of the newly merged ministry. “If the government is genuinely committed to the growth and promotion of these sectors, it is imperative that the new leadership not only possesses a deep understanding of the industries but also a vision that inspires collaboration and innovation,” he stated.
FTAN also expressed its readiness to work constructively with the government to ensure the new ministry fulfills its potential in revitalizing tourism and cultural industries.
The federation reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for policies that drive sustainable growth in these sectors, which are critical to Nigeria’s socio-economic development. FTAN believes that the success of this merger hinges on purposeful governance and resource allocation, as well as continuous collaboration between public and private stakeholders.
While some stakeholders view the merger as an opportunity to streamline operations and create synergies across related sectors, others remain cautious about its abrupt execution and the sudden leadership change.
FTAN emphasised to the government to prioritize the engagement of quality leadership in order to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s tourism, arts, and creative sectors.
