In a moment that resonated with the essence of Nigerian pride and identity, Ademola Lookman, whom I would proudly call an Omoluabi (a person of exemplary character), dazzled the world as he was crowned Best African Footballer of the Year – Men at the prestigious CAF Awards held recently in Marrakech, Morocco.

Though born in England, Lookman remains deeply connected to his Nigerian roots through his parents, who instilled in him a strong sense of cultural identity. His victory was not just about his extraordinary football prowess but also the cultural statement he made during the ceremony that drew positive global attention to Nigeria and its rich heritage.

A Celebration of Yoruba Heritage

Clad in traditional Yoruba attire, Lookman graced the stage in a regal green agbada adorned with beautiful embroidery, complemented by a matching cap- fila and beads- ileke. His entrance alone was a testament to his pride in his Yoruba roots, but it was his opening speech in Yoruba that truly stole the show.

“E kale Nigeria, mo n kii gbogbo yin. E se e, mo dupe,” Lookman began, meaning: “Good evening, Nigeria. I greet you all. Thank you, I appreciate it”, he said.

The audience erupted in applause as Lookman’s deliberate choice to highlight his Nigerian identity sent a powerful message to the world that you can succeed on the global stage without losing touch with your cultural roots.

From England to Nigeria: A Journey of Cultural Rediscovery

Although Lookman was raised in England, his ties to Nigeria were deeply nurtured by his parents, who ensured he grew up immersed in Yoruba traditions. From language and to culture and the concept of (Omorere) good mannerism, these values remained a cornerstone of his upbringing even as his football career soared in Europe.

Choosing to represent Nigeria over England early in his career was a pivotal moment. It endeared him to African football fans and showcased his pride in his Nigerian heritage, despite opportunities to play for England.

A Role Model for Pan-Africanism

Winning the Best African Footballer of the Year Award was not just a personal triumph for Lookman, but a significant moment for African football. By speaking Yoruba and donning traditional attire, he sent a bold message of cultural confidence, unity, and pride. His actions have inspired Africans and those in the diaspora to embrace their roots, showing that cultural heritage is a source of strength in a globalized world.

Nigeria and Africa on the Global Stage

Lookman’s achievement is a reflection of Africa’s growing influence on the global stage. His actions project a positive image of Nigeria and Africa, demonstrating the continent’s ability to blend tradition with modernity. From sports to technology, arts, and entrepreneurship, his success is a testament to the resilience and brilliance of Africans across diverse fields.

As Ademola Lookman continues to shine, his story stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for young Nigerians and Africans. He reminds us them that their cultural identity is not a limitation but a foundation upon which they can build greatness and make an impact on the world stage.
